News from the Cottages 2019

Posted on 27 Februar 2019

It was a long time ago that I wrote a article about Cottage News. So this Year I will start again to show the finest gear from the cottages for the UL hiker community. Before I talk too long let’s start with the gear.

I did not get paid for this article. The companies sent me infos about their new gear. All photos  which are from the companies.

Aeon Li is a tent which gets my full attention and I fell in love when I saw this work of art made with Cuben Fiber for the first time. The Aeon Li is the lightest tent in the Tarptent range and weighs less than 500g including the stakes. On the corners of this tent you have the Tarptent typical PitchLoc™ which increase more storm stability and more comfort in the inner so tall people can sit in the tent without problems. Second, the PitchLoc™ corners are implemented in combination with a structural awning to increase head/shoulder room and create static equilibrium so that both front doors can be completely rolled back without the need for a forward guyline.

Furthermore the Tarptent Moment DW got an update. It is now stronger, more aerodynamic , has a better venting and even more versatile.

The new Double Rainbow got also a redesign and offers more  shoulder room, because of a 33% wider top strut. The bathhub floor got higher and the fly edge lower to stop splash.

Mountain Laurel Designs

Not really new stuff from Mountain Laurel Designs, but they made some improvements of their existing range. They updated the DCF/Cuben and Dyneema X Burn, Prophet and Exodus Packs for 2019. These change add a few features and make the durability and service life longer.

The main changes are
– DCF has more dyneema content  in a custom gray color.
– All Dyneema X  extension collars on Dyneema X versions.
– All Dyneema X side pockets on  Dyneema X and DCF versions.
– Updated Hardware
– XL size in the Exodus for users over 6’3″/ 190cm.
– Improved single hydro port on the Dyneema X versions.
– Improved hardware/strap design for minimalist option of user trimming various parts to save about 4oz.

In the shelter section they have switched to a 8K YYK AquaGuard zipper and eliminated the storm flap. The peak vent also got also a redesign.

Black Rock Gear

Black Rock Gear revived their down hat „Hadron„. They use some of the lightest DWR coated ripstop ever  (0.56oz/yd) which reduces the weight by 25% to the normal down hat.

Furthermore they introduced a new Merino Wool Beanie. This beanie has a deep cut and fits close to your head and looks like it is the perfect beanie to wear under a helmet while biking, skiing or climbing in cold weather. It is made with a 195gsm merino wool from New Zealand and weighs unter one ounce.

Suluk 46

The Tica Ice Tool from Suluk 46 got a redesign and is one of the lightest carbon fiber ice tools on the market. You choose between different carbon shafts and titanium kheadsfor your perfect ice tool.

Another redesigned product ist the Una Stove. This is the lightest double wall titanium wood stove which is at the moment available on the market and comes along with a weight of 71g. The pot stand of course fits into the fire box.

Warbonnet Outdoors

Make your gear unique with new custom section at the Warbonnet Outdoors website. Customers can now build their customized quilts, tarps and hammocks according to your wishes. The Diamantback is the new quilt in their range and replaces the old Mamba quilt which was the standard in the years before. A cool feature of the Diamantback are the pad loops to fix the quilt next to your sleeping mat to stay warm in winter. The quilt comes along with a sewn and a zipped footbox and you can choose between 850 fill Hyper-Dry or Ultra Premium 950 Hyper-Dry RDS certified goose down.

Liteway is a really brand-new cottage from Ukrane. The cottage is a small family business and all gear is designed and tested by the owner himself. For this year they have the PyraOmm Tarp in der pipeline. The special in this tent is that it has two entries on every long side which makes it easier to get in and out when you sleep with two persons in the tent. Another advantage of these two doors is that you can open both for better venting in hot conditions. Finally the PyraOmm Tarp weighs around 420g.

With the Elementum Pack Liteway also offers a classic rolltop backpack. This pack is available in DXG or in X-PAC and has a volume of around 48l and a weight of 400g in size L. To find the perfect backpack for you, you can choose between three different back lengths.

Not ready at the moment, but hopefully in the next time Litway is planing to add a down quilt to their range. So stay tuned for more infos.

Six Moon Designs

For those who like DCF/Cuben Fiber tents can be happy. After three years absence Six Moon Designs changed the strategy and reintroduced a small range of DCF shelters.  Cuben is back. For the start there is the 1P Deschutes and the 2P Heaven in DCF available.

WeitLäufer is a brand new cottage from Germany which offers ultralight backpacks. Alex the guy behind the company started last year with his cottage and released the backpack called Agilist. It is a classic roll-top backpack with 48l and  has a very big and stretchy front pocket where you can store a wet tarp or rain gear. The hip belt is removable and the pack weighs 523g.

For snacks or a small camera there is also a removeable hip belt pocket available.

For later in the year Alex told me that he is planing  a more minimalistic version of the Agilist which weigh less than the normal.

There are not really much news from ZPacks, but they specified their clothing range and released a women line of their rain jacket and pants and the wind shell. I appreciate the longer cut of the rain jacket and would be happy if they do this also as an option for men, because I am a big fan of raincoats.

Durston Gear

The Dan Durston X-Mid 1P tent is a complete new 2 trekking pole double wall tent design. One special of the inner is that it has a parallelogram shape to take full advantage of the inner space. It can be really easy pitched with two trekking poles and weighs less than 800g. You have enough space to store your gear and the big vents and the doors have an easy access from the inner. The tent was designed and founded together with Massdrop. That means that the tent will be sold in drops which will be limited time offered. Dan will also announce a two person version of this tent in near future. Stay tuned.

YAMA Mountain Gear

If you don’t like mittens to warm up your hands, try the new pogies from YAMA Mountain Gear. These are the perfect alternative, if you wanna use your trekking poles or to make some setups at your camera. At the bottom there is a magnetic zipper which snap shut when you wann stay warm. The inner of the ponies is made with a silky soft taffeta and the outer is made with a 2.5 WPB/ 10D ripstop nylon and they are insulated with 3oz of Primaloft Gold.

There will be also a 2nd version of the Sassafras backpack available early in this year. Later in the year, you can expect a DCF option for the 1P Swiftline and a larger, framed version of the Sassafras pack.

Terra Rosa Gear

Terra Rosa Gear is on the way to establish a new product branch. Evan the owner is currently busy tom develop and improve bikepacking packs. He is planing to add some standard packs and a duffel pack to his range. Furthermore the custom side of his business keeps him very busy and there is still a lot to do.

Hanchor is planing to release in the next time two very interesting packs. One of them is the TUFF PLUS hiking backpack which is constructed with the TWS (tapeless weatherproof seam) techniques for better weatherproofness. The pack has many loops around to attach small pockets or compress it with straps. The back pad sleeve is constructed on the outside and secured with Velcro closure for quick access and the pack comes along with the own Hanchor foam mat. X-PAC VX07 is the fabric of choice and the pack has a volume of 39l and a weight of 710g without and 838g with mat.

The other back which is planned is the FROST alpine climbing backpack. This pack is designed for alpine climbers who don’t want to carry a large approach backpack and climb with another smaller climbing backpack. With a threes stakes compression system, you can easily compress the pack to a smaller size if you have to carry less gear. Daisy chains and loops allows you to attach lots of gear to the pack and a long vertical zipper gives the user quick access to the main compartment. The strong X-PAC DX40 is the fabric of choice and the 65l packs weight 1273g and in frameless mode 940g.

Good news for all DCF fans. Seekoutside will offer some shelters in Cuben Fiber. It is planned to release the Cimarron / Redcliff / DST / FaST Tarps in this superb and ultralight fabric.

Another highlight will be the new flight Series Backpacks. These packs have a similar concept to the existing packs, but with more of a thruhiker mindset. Because of the lighter design you will save 8oz, but you still can carry these packs with a load up to 50pounds. Some features of the pack are an internalized frame, high end materials, and built in hip belt pockets. Purpose built for high routes, lightweight backpacking, and your adventure destination flight.

Anfibio Packrafting Store

Anfibio Packrafting Store has a new ultralight boat in the pipeline which is available in April. Sometimes is is necessary to cross a lake or a calm stream where you do not need a heavy whitewater packraft. The Anfibio Nano SL is specially made for these things. It is super lightweight (830g only the boat) and has minimal pack size.

For all those you wanna bring their kids into water, they have the popular Anfibio Buoy Boy in a junior version. This vest offers more security and has a small packsize. The vest is a buoyancy aid in the water and parents should take care of their kids and read the manuals before they use this vest.

If you are an attentive reader of the German UL Forum did you perhaps see that LAUFBURSCHE gave a short comment about his future. I could tell you a bit more, but I will do this in a separate article when it’s time. So stay tuned.

Some of you missing cottages like HyperLite MountainGear, AsTucas, LocusGear, Katabatic Gear or something else? The cottages are satisfied with their product range at the moment or planing to release later. I would update this article as soon I get informations from the cottages.

—– UPDATE —–

Hyperlite Mountain Gear

No Cottage News without HMG. They took a bit longer, but a few days ago they released the Dirigo 2, a new tw0 person tent made with DCF. The tent is a mix of the waterproof DCF-08 and the waterproof breathable DCF-WPB to minimize condensation. Two vestibules offer enough space to store your gear. At the highest point, the tent has a dimension of 114,5cm and it brings 794g of weight on the scale. For the sake of simplicity the Dirigo 2 can be pitched with two trekking poles and without any special connector.
