Posted on 31 August 2015
Coming now to the second part of my detailed OutDoor show report with all the new stuff for 2016.
Ortovox released a complete new batch of new backpacks an the big highlight of the PEAK pack is the brand new SWISSWOOL back system which is made with finest pressed wool from Switzerland. As known from clothing this back panel was made for a perfect moisture and climate management and to have a comfortable and dry feeling at the back. The Peak is available with a volume of 35l and 45l for men and 32l and 42l for women. Another great feature is the circumferential front zipper for an easy access to all your climbing gear. Otherwise the PEAK has all important characteristics of a climbing pack to fix or store your equipment.
Normally you know the Recco Rescue System from winter when you buried by an avalanche. Ortovox picked up this concept and integrated the new SAR1 Recco Rescue System in their newest line of climbing backpacks the TRAD line. Accidents can happen every time and the SAR1 can be used 365 days per year, assuming the weather conditions are perfect to get out with the helicopter.
In the clothing section Ortovox introduced the new Merino Hardshell Light 2.5L (MI) Civetta Jacket which is made with the high-performance Dermizax DT membrane from Toray. The Civet Jacket combines various advantages. It is waterproof (20000mm), lightweight and breathable like a wind jacket. A patent micro bead structure on the inside protects the membrane for abrasion and and increases the wearing comfort on your skin.
Arcteryx presented their new 2016 footwear and the brand new Atom SL Hoody. The Acrux AR Alpine boot is the ne flagship for the upcoming season. This light, durable, weatherproof double boot comes along with a removable Gore Tex liner which keeps your feet dry and warm and a weight of 940g per boot in size 8.5 UK. On the outside you have a laminated gaiter with a zipper to to protect you from water and snow and to protect the toe and heel section they laminated a strong TPU fabric around which also makes the boot abrasion resistant. The midsole is very complex and made from different parts. You have a Carbon Fiber frame for full length rigitidy and a CM moulded EVA midsole for impact cushioning and extra insulation. For excellent grip in the mountains the is a Vibram Mountaineering Outsole.
Next to this alpine boot they released the Acrux SL and the Arakys shoe. The Acrux SL is the SuperLight version and has no Gore Tex lining. This shoe only has an TPU film for high abrasion resistent and a weight of 300g in size 8.5 UK. A Vibram Megakrip sole makes this shoe perfect for light approaches. you can get this shoe in four colors for men and women. The Arakys shoe has an collapsible heel and can be used as a slipper. It comes also along with a Megagrip Vibram sole and has a TPU lamented film around for better protection. Furthermore the Arakys is the first lightweight bouldering and single approach shoe designed for both indoor and outdoor climbers and has a unique one hand closure and memory buckle feature that allows for fast efficient shifts from climb to belay and easy removal. It will weigh 270g and is available in four colors for men and women. For more impressions of the new footwear collection check out Hendrik’s article, because he had a closer look at the Arcteryx Alpine Academy.
Coming now to the new Atom SL Hoody. This ultralight summer insulation jacket has 40g Coreloft Compact insulation in the body and in the side panels there is a Torrent fleece which provides a trim fit and allows a excellent ventilation and the mesh lined sleeves offer a better next to skin comfort. The Atom SL Hoody weighs 285g in size Medium for Men. Another great feature of this new jacket is the No Slip Zip which works like a series of speed bumps keeping the main zipper from self opening. The small pack size makes this jacket perfect to put in your pack for your adventures.
The Pelion Comp SS is a versatile short sleeve tech tee designed for hiking and trekking. It is made with a 150 Nylon Cure Spun Merino which combines the benefits and natural properties of merino wool with a durable nylon core and an abrasion resistant fabric in high wear areas like the shoulders. The weight of 145g in Men’s Medium makes this regular fit shirt perfect for summer trips.
Also new in this series is the Lefroy Short. It is a lightweight, quick drying, durable warm weather hiking short with excellent stretch and air permeability. An articulated patterning and gusseted crotch for mobility and comfort make this 220g short (Men’s Medium) to a perfect hiking short. Furthermore you have to mesh lined hand pockets and one zippered thigh pocket to store small things.
Everything you need. Nothing you don’t. That is the Ueli Project which Mountain Hardwear introduced. A small collection of finest clothing. The idea behind this project was to design only the important clothing parts which are really often used on mountain trips. At first there is the Desna Alpen Hoody and Pants. Booth are made with a stretch fleece and the pants got some extra Thermal Q Elite insulation in key areas. Pants and hoody are really tough and the wicking hardface fleece resists abrasion and pilling. Next there is the Supercharger Hooded Insulated Jacket. This jacket is remarkably light, tough and weather resistant while maintaining expedition level warmth. The Supercharger is the new gold standard for alpine insulation. For the body of the jacket Mountain Hardwear used the DryQ 40D 2.5L Stretch to get the best weather protection and for insulation they used 800 cuin Water Resistent goose down. At least the weather protection. As jacket you have the Supercharger Shell jacket, a very tough and effective fully taped waterproof breathable jacket made with DryQ 2.5L 15D Fabric. This jacket features a fully helmet compatible hood and a pocket for some small things. The Quasar Lite Pant is the awesome mountaineering and climbing pant which was built for unforeseen weather conditions. For the pants they used the DryQ 2.5l 40D to make it waterproof. This pants has also mechanical stretch for movements and maneuvers on abrasive surface.
Another piece of news was the Lamina construction. By welding the shell fabric directly to the insulation, The Lamina construction holds insulation in place without the cold spots caused by traditional stitching. With this technology Mountain Hardwear could create warmer bags with less weight. Another benefit of this technology is that this construction reduces fiber compression and bags can last longer. retaining loft and staying warmer over the long haul.
Ghost UL 1/2/3 is the name for the new and lightest tent, designed for fast moving backcountry adventurer. The flysheet looks a bit incomplete, but this is the idea of this truly free standing lightweight geometry and design. It has a guaranteed watertight construction with fully taped fly , taped perimeter seam, welded corners and welded guy clip anchors. For the poles they used the ultralight and stable DAC Featherlight NSL poles. The Ghost UL 1 weighs 751g, 973g for the UL2 and 1226g for the UL3.
While I became dad over one year ago I also had a look at kids gear and Kamik makes great gear for the youngest outdoor enthusiasts. Kids love to play outside and need really tough jackets with a maximum of warmth for the colder seasons. So Kamik introduced a 3 in 1 jacket which you can use for the whole year. This jacket contains also a polar fleece jacket which you can zip out and wear alone. The jacket comes along with reflective piping which can reflect to 350m that kids can be seen in the darkness and is waterproof and breathable. It has a name tag and lots of safety feature to protect out children.
For really cold winter winters Kamik has a Kids Down Jacket also with reflective piping and integrated hood. A tough zipper and elastic sleeves makes this jacket perfect to play outside in winter. The jacket is available in 4 colors from size 80-164. For more protection you can combine the 3 in 1 Jacket or the Down Jacket with the Hi-tech Outdoor rain paints which has some reinforcements at the back, the knees and the ankles. This pants also has some extensions which can be fixed and cuffs to keep the water and dirt out of the shoes.

Adidas was not in my focus for a long time, because it was more a lifestyle brand for me, but a random meeting should teach me better. The Adidas Terrex Agravic Hybrid Soft-shell jacket is brand new for 2016. This jacket combines the advantages of different fabric. It is made with Windstopper Active Shell, a very lightweight windproof and and rain pellet fabric and Pertex Equilibrium for an excellent moisture control. The regular fit Agravic Jacket weighs 225g in size 50 for Men.
For colder temps is the Terrex Skyclimb Alpha Jacket the right one. They used Polartec Alpha for an optimum heat-weight ratio. Another benefit of this fabric is the breathability and it also insulates when it is wet. For a special appearance the isolation was printed. The jackets has two big pockets with a zipper and elastic cuffs and weighs 450g ins size 50 for Men.
Terrex Agravic is the new shoe from Adidas which got an OutDoor Industry Award. The Boost system in this shoe allows endless energy in the mountains and maximum adaptability on rocky ground. The Traxion sole with Continental rubber compound offers a superb grip even when it is wet. Around the shoe there is a laminated film for a better abrasion resistance.
Another highlight was the Adidas X-KING which brings mountain bike tires to your feet. Engineers with Continental wheel experts the terrex X-KING offers the ultimate grip to run on the same trails where you ride your mountain bike. Manufactured just like a tire, the Continental rubber compound is heat-pressed directly into the upper material. Weight is reduced and you get lower to the ground. The X-KING will feature a removable and swappable midsole/insole for different drops, fits and applications and the shoe has the speed lacing construction for fast and snug lacing.
Wanderstab @ Gemse
Another cool piece of gear I wanna present is the Wanderstab. This hiking pole is ultralight, but the story behind is interesting and is worth to promote it. The Wanderstab is an high-tech product, with the elegance of a chamois, the charm of a handmade product and with thoughtful ergonomics and innovative function. It is a composite construction of wood and rubber to get an excellent flexibility and increased stability with a final weight of 300g. You can hold the stick in several position for optimum weight distribution. The Wanderstab is available in there sizes and different woods. Last but not least the thing which made this pole so cool and interesting. It is made at the Lebenshilfe Detmold, a place where people with a handicap customize this pole. In this community, they are encouraged and can take responsibility for their work and have a duty to act autonomously.
This year Vaude released a very cool down quilt which immediately won an OutDoor Industry Award. The Alpstein 200DWN is the quilt for warmer seasons and the Alpstein 45n DWN is the quilt for colder weather. Important to say is also that two blogger (Hendrik & Carsten) helped to develop this brand new quilt and gave the designers their feedback during the prototype phase. Both quilts have certified down. 450g in the Alpstein 450DWN and 200g in the Alpstein 200DWN. Furthermore the quilt has a thoughtful attaching system to fix it on your sleeping mat. The final weights are 750g and 550g.
You like Origami? Then check out the new Vaude Wingtarp SUL 2P. This new tarp can be pitched with only one trekking pole and offers enough space for an emergency tent for two people. It is also possible to fix the tarp on a tent to get a big canopy. The minimum weight of the Wingtarp SUL 2P is 390g and the fly is made with silicone coated 20D Ripstop.
Osprey launched the revised Pogo AG Baby Carrier. Now with the new Anti-Gravtiy system, the Poco AG is even more comfortable and ventilated than before. Other new innovations are a rapid deploy sunshade in all three models which also can be used with the add on raincover. The Pogo AG Series ensures that child safety is at the forefront of the design, meeting and exceeding all international safety certifications. Furthermore the new Pogo AG has a “fit on the fly” hipbelt with 3D mesh for better ventilation and the design also allows you to adjust the hip belt in three different positions. The baby harness is height adjustable to accommodate growth and you can adjust the foot stirrups. There will be also three Pogo carriers available. The smallest the Pogo AG weighs 3.13kg, the Pogo Plus 3.48kg and the Pogo Premium 3.77kg.
That was not all. One are or maybe two article are in the line. If you cannot wait check out the Flickr OutDoor Show album for more photos.
