OutDoor Show 2013: Tents and Sleeping Bags
Posted on 07 August 2013
After all other blogger have posted their impressions of the OutDoor Show 2013 in Friedrichshafen it is time for me to write some more notes of the gear with details. I wanna start with with one the most interesting things. Tents and Sleeping Bags.
The company from UK is always good for a surprise. In the last years they presented with the Laser Ultra 1 and the Voyager Ultra 2 the first Cuben Fiber tents on the market. For this year they announced a lightweight Ultra Mini Tarp made with Cuben Fiber and the name of this tarp is programm. I was really disappointed of this new tarp. It was stored in their reception counter and it has not been pitched at any time. On demand they showed me a bundle of Cuben Fiber and that was it. So there are no photos available only some specs from the press kit. The tarp has a size of 145 x 122cm and covers only the upper body and you need a waterproof bivy to protect the your legs.
Congrats. Crux got an OutDoor Industry Award for their X1 Strike shelter. This stormproof shelter offers space for two people and equipment and weighs only 1.95kg. It is a highly breathable mountain shelter and excellent for trips into the snow or stormy weather. The asymmetric shape offers enough space in the head room of the front. All tents were tested by the owner of Crux in the mountains whether they do their job well. The flysheet of the X1 Strike is made with a carbon coated fabric and is highly breathable.
There is always a company, which surprised me the most. This year it was Vaude with their Lizard GUL 1p shelter. Congrats for the OutDoor Industry Award. Vaude showed us that it is also possible to make lightweight tents without the expensive Cuben Fiber. The flysheet of the Lizard GUL is made with 10D Ripstop and both sides are silicone coated. Another clou of the tent is that Vaude did not use a complete carbon pole from side to side. They only used the half of the pole an designed a half dome tent. The inner is also made with a thin 10D Ripstop. Two vents ensure a good ventilation in the inside. By the way the Lizard GUL is a minimalistic tent, but it offers enough space for a 180cm tall person with gear. You have to crawl into the tent, because the inner has only a height of 75cm, but that is no problem.
The Eureka WikiUp family got a small update and growth. They changed the color and the fabric of the flysheet. Now they use a 20D Gorlyn with 3000mm and both sides are silicone coated.
The new product in the range is the WikiUp 6. This new shelter has dimensions of 460 x 440cm and a heigt of 310cm so there is enough space to stand. The WikiUp 6 also comes along with a DAC adjustable aluminum poles and has a weight of around 4,5kg and is and ideal shelter for family camping or canoe trips.
MSR redesigned their tent collection. The Hubba Hubba weighs 1,72kg and got a new stealth colored flysheet. It is a complete free-standing tent with two big doors so everyone could use his own entrance to get into the sleeping bag. Big vents improve the climate in the inner.
Sea To Summit
Sea To Summit also make a lot of interesting things. This time they came along with a brand new sleeping bag the Spark Sp1. The Sleeping bag has a fillweight of 180g 850+ Ultra Dry European Goose Down and weighs 348g in size regular. It is made with a 10D Pertex Quantum which is DWR treated on the outside and a 15D soft touch nylon on the inside and the bag has a zipper on the left. The Spark Sp1 has a comfort limit of 12°C.
Easton presented with the Si2 a lightweight, strong and breathable four season concept tent which will we sold soon in small limited runs. It is the lightest in class and something special. The flysheet is made with Cuben Fiber with a complete new lamination of eVent to make the tent waterproof and breathable. For the poles they used their strong carbon poles.
RAB also made a step into the right direction with their sleeping bags. Since a long time they offer superb down sleeping bags, but they could improve their quality once again. With the start of the hiking season next year RAB will use the hydrophobic down in all their sleeping bags. The down is treated with a Flourcarbon free Nikwax technology and is complete waterproof. With the use of this technology, premium European goose down and lightweight Pertex Quantum RAB could reduce the pack size and weight of their sleeping packs.
Also new in the RAB rage for 2014 are the Ignition Sleeping Bags. This are synthetic sleeping bags with a Pyrotec polyester insulation and they are available in three different material strengthening (100gsm/160gsm/200gsm). The lightest one is the Ingnition 2, weighs 1050g and has a comfort of 5°C. All bags of this series are also available in size XL.
Grüezi Bag from Bavaria makes really cool sleeping bags. If you are looking for a sleeping bag for car camping trips where the weight does not matter you will find something in their range for an excellent price. All bags have an synthetic insulation and you can get them in different cool designs. They also offer a kids bag which grows, so this means this bag fits a child from 100 to 155cm and you don’t have to buy a new one after a short time.
The next article is about clothing and shoes. Stay tuned.
